Still no word from Queen’s… I know that it will, eventually, get here…I still want it to get here now. I’m writing lots of lists in the mean time, things I need to sort out: Visa, Halls, Do I need a Canadian bank account? How can I get one of those?? I’m probably overlooking lots of important things in favour of silly stuff like wether of not to take bedding or just buy new stuff over there…. I’m going on holiday on saturday for two weeks so I want to be prepared to get on with sorting things out when I get back.
I Also still need to sort out applying for the Butex scholarship thing… a 600 word statement isn’t all that much but feels like i’ve just had the chance to stop writing essays and is difficult to motivate myself to do it. Still, £500 would make it worth it , I suppose!
The deadline for paying for Halls is the 1st of July so really i’s rather sort that out before I go away, could be cutting it a bit fine to have the money transferred otherwise… so many things to consider and so little time! I can’t believe three months from now i’ll be in Canada…scary stuff… excited too though.
I have joined a few of the groups for Queen’s on facebook and have chatted to a few of the people who are going to be going from various places in August. It seems the top concern at the moment is the fact noone has had their letter/ sorted accomodation yet. It’s comforting to know it’s not just me!

You can easily sort out a bank account when you get there. The university probably has links with a particular branch so ask when you get to the International Office, but otherwise you just need to take your passport and your Study Permit with you, plus proof of residence (my lease worked for my bank).
I ended up buying my bedding when I got there, but it worked out quite pricey as I hadn’t a clue where to go for cheaper things! Check out where the local ‘Zellers’ or ‘Walmart’ are, they do ‘Going off to Uni’ packs of bedding, which have a duvet, pillows and sheets all for about $80. They are also great for laundry bags, boxes, files etc etc.
Get an Isic Card as VIA Rail offers good student discounts but only accepts ISIC.
Please email me if you’d like some more info. I have spent the year in Montreal, so vaguely local for you (in Canadian terms!). I’ll try to think of other things and come back again.
Good Luck!
Thanks! This is all really useful. I’m currently grappling with my visa application. The joys! When you were applying what did you find the best way to pay for things in Canadian dollars from the UK to be? I paid a deposit for my residence fees recently and it cost me like £20 to do it, doesn’t seem too bad as a one off but i have quite a few payments to make for things like my visa and residences before i actually get there….is there a better way?
Thanks again
